Chains of habit are too light to be felt until they are too heavy to be broken.
-Warren Buffett
Isn’t it astonishing how much easier it is for us to see the bad side of things rather than the good? A 1996 Stanford study suggests it’s time to stop that habit. Complaining, or even being complained to, for 30 minutes or more can physically damage the brain. To be fair, I agree that some of us struggle more than others. Some of us deal with incredibly hard situations putting a dent on our faith. So as much as we may want to, we all have those moments of complaining. It is often said that a tough life builds character, but do you ever talk to the universe and God saying…”Hellooooo???? when are you going to be done building my character?
My mother used to say “En la confianza esta el peligro”. Translation…
“In the comfort zone, is the danger”. It means that when we become too comfortable we cease to move forward in life. We remain in the same routine day after day until one day we realize that we’ve turned into a programmed robot carrying the days out automatic with no growth. Do you ever feel that way? Like one foot is always asking the other foot for permission to move forward. I won’t pretend to know the answers. I can only tell you that today I’m telling myself to move forward.
I certainly know firsthand how the practice of procrastination will prevent you from reaching the life you deserve. We should always think twice when vowing to make changes. Don’t deny the truth and it will help you to move forward. How hard are you working to build better habits and get rid of the old ones? What s is your ego saying to prevent you from finishing? If success is what you’re after, do you recognize when someone is giving a hand and a door of opportunity opens, or does your pride come out to play reminding you not to take orders from anyone? Not wanting to accept constructive criticism prevents us from reaching our goals. I’m pretty sure we’ve all gotten defensive at some point in our lives. I do believe that our emotions can be connected to many things. Wouldn’t it be great if we all were forced to go to therapy at some point in our lives? Why is it such a taboo? Why do most people see it as a negative? It’s mind-boggling to me.
I hear so many people saying that there is a purpose for us all. I still don’t know if I’ve found my purpose? Have you found yours; or do you live your days like that robot? Remember that by the time you realize it, you will lose yourself and all that you are suppose to be on this planet. Maybe if we each did our part it would be different. Saying “good morning” to people, saying “thank you”, saying “Good job!”, Saying I’m sorry!
I encourage you to talk with yourself. What bad habit are you attempting to break? Biting your nails? Picking at your body, smoking, excessive drinking, not listening, yelling, eating junk food, getting to work late, not making your bed. My goodness, there is so much more I could add to this list. As far as habits are concerned, remember this. The same way we need to get rid of the bad ones, we also need to begin creating the good ones. Why wait for tomorrow? Have that talk and write down your worst 3 habits. Then begin!
